Dei Flucht aus der Zeit [Flight out of Time: A Dada Diary] (Munich, 1927) Trans. Ann Raimes. New York: The Viking Press, 1974. 25

“Marinetti sends me?Parole in Liberta?by himself, [Francesco] Cangiullo, [Paolo] Buzzi, and [Corrado] Govoni. They are just letters of the alphabet on a page; you can roll up such a poem like a map. The syntax has come apart. The letters are scattered and assembled again in a rough-and-ready way. There is no language any more, the literary astrologers and leaders proclaim; it has to be invented all over again. Disintegration right in the innermost process of creation.”?Hugo Ball, 9 July 1916Dei Flucht aus der Zeit [Flight out of Time: A Dada Diary]?(Munich, 1927) Trans. Ann Raimes. New York: The Viking Press, 1974. 25

Sound Poetry, the artistic practice of using phonetic sounds of speech rather than semantic meaning, was inherited by the Dada movement from Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the Futurists, and evolved to be one of the most recognizable literary modus operandi of Dadaism. By and large used in performance, the sounds of words were awarded central importance and were treated, in Ball’s words, as the “innermost alchemy of the word,” the “last and holiest refuge” of poetry.

Such performances became pivotal to Cabaret Voltaire, a nightclub in Zurich, Switzerland, founded by Hugo Ball and his partner Emmy Hennings in 1916 as a site for entertainment, artistic and political activities, and frequented by artists, musicians, poets, and writers. Those nights at Cabaret Voltaire, typified by chaotic and horrendous performances, expressed the artists’ frustration and disillusion with World War I and redefined art theory and practice for the 20th century.

It is no surprise then that the Swiss artist Nadja Solari, who is exhibiting at The Container this summer to celebrate the centenary of the Dada movement, as part of Japan’s Dada Festival, took inspiration for her sculptural installation from the Dadaists’ Sound Poetry tradition. It is also not a surprise that Solari, in her references to Sound Poetry and Dada, draws inspiration from current technologies and digital processes. In the last decade her works have been strongly influenced both by new media and everyday objects ? the correlation and relationship we have with them as a society.

Nadja Solari’s exhibition at The Container,?nibble, nibble, gnaw, is a spatial mixed-media installation, constructing a connection between the contemporary digital-age bot-generated spam emails and Sound Poetry. Inspired by the subject lines of such emails, which are often a comical neologism that tries to outsmart the spam filtering programmes to avoid interception, is akin to Sound Poetry, and used as the backbone of this exhibition. During this process these subject lines and emails defunct semantic meaning and create a new language, random and chaotic, reminiscent of the Dadaists’ writings ? the generated poetry of our current digital and virtual realities. The result is similar to early 20th century poetry that many Dadaists generated through manual techniques, such as Automatism and chance, currently, replaced by digitally automated systems.

The exhibition at The Container is a loose conglomerate of everyday objects, each with a different kind of circuit/stream/flow, or a repeated mechanism, to raise issues relating to the boundaries between the private and public. The objects are adorned with over-sized heart-shaped gingerbread biscuits, bearing bot-generated spam messages lifted from actual spam emails. The iconography is deeply influenced by advertising, consumerism, slogans, and catchphrases we habitually encounter in our everyday lives, with a dose of associations taken from fairytales’ symbolism and allegory.

In the spirit of Dada, the exhibition is also enhanced by a range of live performances that take place during the opening reception of the exhibition. Directed by Solari, Tokyo’s Houkakai Yodel Club is performing a live act of spam mail yodeling, mixing traditional melodies with bot-generated “Sound Poetry.” Other performances include a live bagpipe performance and a newly composed classical music number for piano accompanied by a performance art act ? all to contribute to the surreality and chaos of the event.

This publication, an artist book / catalogue, is a mood map of associative imagery and keywords the artist generated whilst developing this exhibition, and it showcases the conceptual development process of the exhibition. The publication also sees an especially commissioned short story, a contemporary fairytale, written by the young author Shawn Mehrens,?The Buried Princess, inspired by keywords and imagery contributed by Solari. The story is also accompanied by an Instagram account with the usernametheburiedprincess, with images from this publication and posts from “Helen”, the main character of the story, facilitated by Nadja Solari. Followtheburiedprincess?on the app, or search for the hash tag bearing the same name.

The exhibition and this publication would not have been possible without the generous help and support of the Swiss embassy in Tokyo, and we are grateful for this partnership and delighted for the kind invitation to participate in Japan’s Dada Festival, to celebrate the centenary of Dada.
